Meet Anthony Torres: A Remarkable Boy, A Devoted Mother, and a Story of Community Support

We’d like you to meet Anthony Torres, a remarkable 12-year-old boy diagnosed with PHACE syndrome, and his devoted mother, Janete. Anthony and his mom were nominated by Tracey Gardner, his Physical Therapy Assistant at Meeting Street to receive a handicap accessible van by the Team Noah Foundation.

Ms. Gardner has had the privilege of knowing Anthony since the summer of 2018 and has witnessed his incredible resilience in the face of numerous challenges firsthand.

What is PHACE Syndrome?

PHACE syndrome is a rare disorder that affects Anthony's motor skills and overall development. Despite these obstacles, Anthony continues to exude sweetness and determination every day. However, his condition necessitates regular medical appointments and procedures, including a recent neurological surgery.

Living in a second-floor apartment, Anthony relies on a manual wheelchair for mobility. Sadly, his current foldable wheelchair is no longer suitable due to frequent breakdowns and inadequate support. While Anthony will soon receive a new wheelchair better suited to his needs, it posed a new challenge for Janete: transportation.

Without a handicapped accessible vehicle, Janete was manually transferring Anthony between his wheelchair and the car. Given Anthony's size and unsteadiness on his feet, these transfers pose significant safety risks for both of them. Furthermore, the new wheelchair, being non-folding and larger, cannot fit into standard vehicles, necessitating a vehicle modification.

Janete is a loving and dedicated mother who sacrifices tirelessly for Anthony's well-being. However, the financial burden of a handicapped accessible vehicle was overwhelming for a single parent, even with financing options. Despite her reluctance to ask for help, Ms. Gardner knew she deserved support in obtaining the vehicle crucial for Anthony's safety and mobility.

Today, Anthony and Janete have a handicapped accessible van, thanks to the incredible support of the Team Noah Foundation community. Their story is a testament to the power of compassion, community, and the difference we can make when we come together.

If you are looking for an opportunity to help children like Anthony, please donate today.
